Along with Chinese brush painting, Chinese brush calligraphy is an unique art form that is central to Chinese culture. A student of Chinese brush calligraphy will be schooled in the brush strokes and construct of each Chinese word; he or she will be taught how to properly hold the brush, how to prepare and mix ink and how to apply brush strokes that render each word a distinct character reflecting the uniqueness of the artist. The Chinese abacus dates from the late Han Dynasty and has been in use for over 2000 years. After being taught the basics of the abacus operation, students in the Mental Math class will be able to utilize this instrument to navigate various mathematical operations through specialized techniques of mental processing and calculation. Chinese Yo-Yo
The Chinese Yo-Yo, also known as Tzuh-ling, empty bell, pulling bell and wind bell, was created so long ago that there is no known inventor. Originally, the Chinese YoYo was made of wood or bamboo. Today, as a result of modern technology, most Chinese YoYos are composed of two durable plastic wheels and a joining steel rod and constructed so that the center of mass is located precisely at the middle of the steel rod where the string pivots the YoYo. With the weight evenly distributed, the performer can execute really fantastic tricks without fear of breaking the Chinese YoYo. (Total 40 students) It is interesting that the Chinese YoYo can be used by people of any age for play or moderate exercise. There are many wonderful tricks that can be performed by using your hands, fingers, legs, neck and even the waist. Individuals who use the Chinese YoYo for fifteen minutes a day improve their coordination, flexibility, stamina and strength, resulting in a nimble body and a sharp mind. For many families, exercising with the Chinese YoYo is an opportunity for everyone to share time together in an enjoyable and healthy activity. This is an extremely popular class in our school. 本課程通過對經典作品的學習,讓中學年齡學生對中華傳統文化有所認識。本課程把文言文的傳統作品注上拼音和英語翻譯,課堂上用活潑有趣的中英雙語解說和討論,讓學生們能夠親耳聽到前人的聲音。課程的第一部份學習兩本關於孝悌的著作:《弟子規》和《孝經》。孝就是對父母和祖先好,悌就是對長輩尊敬。幾千年來,孝悌在中國被視為文明社會的基礎、道德行為的保障。 要明白中國傳統文化,要理解幾千年中華思想,就一定要明白孝和悌這兩個概念。課程的第二部份學習幾篇有代表性的著作,例如《木蘭辭》、《愛蓮記》、《陋室銘》、《吊古戰場文》、詩經和屈原的選篇等,來使學生們更全面地認識中華傳統文化。這年代裡,要被認為是一個具有全面教育的人,就要對人類文化遺產這個重要和獨特的部份有所認識。本課程將會給予學生一個獲取這方面認識的有力推動。[更詳細]

For High School Students Freshmen or Higher.
This class acquaints students of high school age with Chinese culture by exposing them to classical Chinese works. English translations and pinyin pronunciation accompany the wen yan wen style Chinese texts, and during class both English and Chinese are used to explain and discuss the works in a lively and interesting way. The aim is to let the students personally hear the voices of the ancients. Part 1 of this course covers Di Zi Gui (Rules for Students) and Xiao Jing (Classic of Xiao). Both are texts on xiao and ti, where xiao means being good to parents and ancestors, and ti means being respectful to elders. For thousands of years, xiao and ti have been looked upon in traditional Chinese society as the foundation of civil society and the guarantee of moral conduct. To understand Chinese traditional culture and thought, one must understand the concepts of xiao and ti. Part 2 of this course covers several typical works to round out the student’s view of traditional Chinese culture, works such as “On Loving the Lotus”, “Ballad of Mulan”, “Inscription – The Crude House”, “Eulogy to the Ancient Battlefield”, selections from the Book of Poetry and from Qu Yuan, and so forth. In this day and age, to be considered to have a truly well rounded education one must have some knowledge of this important and unique part of the human cultural heritage. Tai Chi Chuan
Tai chi chuan (simplified Chinese: 太极拳; traditional Chinese: 太極拳; pinyin: tàijíquán; Wade-Giles: t'ai4 chi2 ch'üan2) (literal translation "Supreme Ultimate Fist") is an internal Chinese martial art often practiced for health reasons. It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art technique, demonstration competitions, and longevity. Consequently, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims. Some of tai chi chuan's training forms are well known to Westerners as the slow motion routines that groups of people practice together every morning in parks around the world, particularly in China.[More...]
